— About Building Physics and CFD

Building Physics optimizes the performance and sustainability of buildings

Building physics acts on the parameters of temperature, humidity, air velocity, light, climate, acoustics and biology to improve the energy performance of buildings, safety, and the overall comfort of occupants. This field of physics is unique in that it combines expertise from architecture, engineering and biology. Historically, it was developed to solve design problems faced by the building industry, such as ventilation, thermal comfort, indoor pollution and façade design.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models the behaviours of airflows

The development of building physics goes hand in hand with the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD combines the power of super computers and dedicated algorithms to solve the physical equations governing the behaviour of fluids (gases or liquids).
In building design, CFD is used to model airflows, pollutant dispersion, fire propagation and heat exchanges within complex geometry buildings. This is done in time scales compatible with those of the design and engineering phases of projects.

CFD also offers the possibility to visualize in graphical form and in a simple and fast way the physical phenomena at play in the environment of a building. Finally, the speed of execution offered by the computing power of supercomputers provides flexibility and a previously unknown possibility to test a multitude of designs before the execution phase.
